This is to promote safety within the company and each individual driver, further reducing road accidents. Van drivers and company cars are involved 1 in every 4 serious road collisions, increasing the risk of injury and costs to your business. How to do an Emergency STOP!

Posted on by

If you are taking driving lessons with our driving instuctors in Luton, you will know that there is a 1 in 3 chance of receiving an Emergency Stop during your driving test. An Emergency Stop will test your competence in stopping the car as quickly and as safely as possible. It’s important to know how to carry it out efficiently as it could result in you failing your test.

Why is an Emergency Stop important?

You may have to carry out an Emergency Stop for various reasons when you drive. A small child may run into the road, someone in front may suddenly brake or there could be problems with your own car in which the safest thing to do is stop the vehicle. Hopefully you won’t need to but whatever the reason may be, you need to know how to stop the car in the quickest way possible to prevent a car accident. Furthermore, driving in an area like Luton brings along with it many narrow roads with limited space. Driving through town for example may require you to travel very slowly in the event someone steps out in front of your car. You need to be in control so you can take the safest action.

If you drive with our driving instructors in Luton, your driving instructor will thoroughly cover the Emergency Stop before your driving test. However, here are some of the reasons you may fail on performing an Emergency Stop :

Not reacting quickly enough. A delay in reaching the brake pedal quickly enough will cause the car to travel further than it should.

Not stopping quickly enough. The brake pedal should be pressed very firmly. By not doing so, the car will take longer to stop.

Vehicle skids out of control. Stamping on the pedal resulting in a skid, although a small skid if bought under control quickly might not fail you.

Taking your hand off of the steering wheel before the vehicle stops. You try to apply the parking brake or touch the gear stick before the vehicle has actually stopped.

Applying the parking brake before the vehicle has stopped. This could result in the vehicle going out of control.

Not checking your mirrors once you have stopped. You will not be aware of what is going on behind you. Not completing an all round observation once you are asked to drive on. A 360 observations must be done as usual before you drive on to ensure it is safe to move off.

Not signaling if there were someone to benefit while stationary or before moving off after the controlled Stop. It could be a car in front or behind you, let them know you are stationary or let them know you are about to move off, if it is safe to do so.

Driving Test Tips in Oxford

Posted on by

If you are taking your driving lessons in Oxford and thinking of booking your practical driving test, read some of these useful tips that you may or may not know!

1. If you feel extremely nervous before your driving test in Oxford, you can decide to have someone in the car with you for moral support such as a friend or your driving instructor as long as they do not speak during the examination. You can also use an interpreter if you do not speak fluent English and can ask a relative or friend to interpret for you (Ensure that they are not ADI/PDI trained)

2. Driving Instructors in Oxford do not have to pass and fail a certain number of pupils each week. If you are worthy of passing your driving test then you will! However, every examiner does have to be within 5% of their centre pass rate and 10% of the national pass rate. If this doesn’t happen, then they are likely to be investigated.

3. If you have previously taken a driving test and failed, you may remember who conducted your last test. However, examiners take many tests every week and may not remember you so treat the test as your first one and stay confident and calm.

4. It is never too late to learn to drive but a trend shows that younger learners outperform  older pupils. Statistics show that in 2004-2006, 17 year old girls had a pass rate of 48% whilst boys had 51% success. Pupils aged 27 showed a pass rate of 43% and 36% whilst other learners aged 47, had a success rate of 25%! The DSA ( Driving Standards Agency) proposes the idea that you will need 2 hours of driving tuition for every year of your life. For example: A 17 year old learner will require 34 hours of driving lessons in Oxford whereas a 30 year old will need 60 hours of professional tuition.

5. If you are taking your driving lessons in Oxford with a fully qualified instructor, then they shouldn’t put you in for a driving test if you are a danger to the road. However, if this appears to be the case, your driving test can be cut short by the examiner. Your driving instructor will then have to walk back to the test centre because they’re not insured on the vehicle which will not make you very popular!

If you would like any other information on driving tests or driving lessons in Oxford and the surrounding areas, feel free to give us a call 0800 458 1226.

Lane Discipline

Posted on by

During your practical driving test, you will be marked for your “lane discipline”. This requires you to position the vehicle in accordance with the kerb and with the centre of the road. Remember! It is essential that you stay within the white markings on the road. It’s also important to be aware of suitable lanes when faced with multiple choices. For example. Turning left, right or carrying on straight ahead. You could receive a minor fault or even a major fault in your driving test for being very careless with your lane discipline, so read through some tips to help you Pass with Class and put them into practice during your driving lessons.

Your driving test examiner will be checking to see that you are positioning the car appropriately, depending on the width of the road. The driving examiner will also be on the look out for a few other things as well:

Keep your car in the centre of the left hand side of the road. If the road is very wide, keep to the left approximately a metre away from the kerb.

Avoid moving in and out between parked cars unnecessarily.

Position yourself in the correct lane as early as possible and do not change lanes unnecessarily.

Keep to the middle of any lane markings when possible.

Adjust your position as necessary. This is so you can deal with any driving hazards ahead and behind of the vehicle.

Use the right hand lane or lanes on a dual carriageway to only overtake or turn right. The only exception to this is if the road markings state otherwise.

Here’s a few examples of poor lane discipline whilst driving:

Roundabouts

Roundabouts that consist of two lanes have the option to either turn right (right hand lane) or turn left/ go straight ahead (left lane). Whilst taking pupils driving lessons in Bedford, I have seen drivers who are driving straight ahead, but cut across the roundabout in the right hand lane, causing other vehicles on the road to stop in fear of crashing.

Motorways

Although you will not be driving on the motorway during your driving lessons, you may decide to once you have passed, so it is important to be aware of general driving rules. E.g. Choosing to drive in the right hand lane and travel at 50mph. The right hand lane is used to overtake other cars, so 50mph is inappropriate for this lane as it is too slow. Using the inside left lane would be a far better option. Click driving lessons on the motorway for more information.

White Markings

Drifting in and out of the white road markings may cause other cars to bump into you if they are trying to overtake your vehicle. Always remember that when you have chosen a lane, stay inside the markings to prevent other drivers or pedestrians  becoming confused about your positioning.

If you have any questions on lane discipline or would like to know more useful driving test tips, then call 0800 4581226 or call/text ‘Anthony Johnson’ the owner on 07880886119.

Driving Lessons in Lithuanian-Russian

Posted on by

Hi, my name is Marius and I cover driving lessons in Bedford and Milton Keynes! I’ve been a driving instructor in Bedford and Milton Keynes for the last 3 years, previously working for BSM driving school. I joined driveJohnson’s because of their standards. ‘Anthony Johnson’ approached me because of my good reputation.

I wanted to work for a driving school that takes pride in their pass rate and doesn’t just care about taking peoples money, hence, why I joined driveJohnson’s.  I love working as a driving instructor and having the chance to meet different people everyday and make an impact on improving their driving skills quickly.

I also love my job because I am from Lithuania and therefore can provide other people who speak Lithuanian or Russian with driving lessons in their own language. Finding someone who speaks your language in another country can be difficult at times so it’s very rewarding to give others the chance to learn to drive if they struggle with their English.

I currently carry out my driving lessons in a Toyota Yaris which is a really easy car to learn in as it’s fairly small for dealing with all of those tricky maneuvers. It’s pretty common that people fail their driving test due to lack of observations when doing a reverse maneuver. So my top tip would be: remember a 360 observation before you start and then another 360 before your point of turn. Whilst your reversing look over your left should at least 6 times and at least twice over your right shoulder. Do these counts in your head, so you don’t forget. I would say this is the minimum requirement and it should work for all 4 manuever’s, keeping Mr/Mrs examiner happy. So remember 6 left and 2 right. Remember, always take your time so that your judgements are accurate.

I am very confident in preparing pupils for their driving test, this is one of my specialities. I fully understand what the examiners are after on test day, so I will mould your driving style to suit the driving test examiners requirements/preferences. I can also interpret for you on your driving test if you speak Lithuanian or Russian. This will significantly help your ability to follow directions as we can practice for what happens on the day of your test, doing mock tests in your driving lessons in Bedford/Milton Keynes leading up to your test.

If you would like to know more information or ask me questions about your driving lesson requirements, please feel free to call me on 07871 599409.

Clutch Control

Posted on by

When you begin your driving lessons in Bedford, mastering your clutch control is half of the battle. It’s the thing pupils struggle most with so get as much practice as possible. It always helps to understand how the clutch works, the best ways to practice and the techniques to get it right!

How does the clutch on a car work?

The clutch consists of two friction plates. These plates move apart when the clutch pedal is fully pressed down. By doing this, the engine is disconnected from the wheels. This prevents any of the engines power being transmitted to the wheels of the car. Therefore, when the clutch pedal is released the two plates can then move back together, allowing the engines power to transfer to the wheels. This is known as the ‘biting point‘. As you release the clutch pedal more fully, you will notice that more power will be transmitted from the engine to the wheels because they are becoming closer together. Once your foot has completely released the clutch pedal, the two plates will lock so that all of the engines power is sent to the wheel.

Using the clutch.

As you may well know, the clutch has a key part to play in operating a vehicle. So what can the clutch be used for…

The clutch pedal is used to move from one gear to another whilst driving.
The clutch is used to control the car when coming to stop to prevent the car from stalling.
The clutch can be used to stop the car when travelling at slow speeds or carrying out manoeuvres by using a technique called clutch control. This is when the clutch pedal is only half engaged.

How can I practice my Clutch Control?

Now we all know how a clutch pedal works and what it can be used for, we can start to look at ways of perfecting your clutch control. Practicing a hill start is a great way of mastering clutch control. Here’s a simple step – by – step guide on how you can practice…

>p

1. First find a road on a fairly steep hill in a quiet area. Places like Brickhill or Putnoe in Bedford are great places for your driving instructor to take you on your lessons.

2. Press the clutch down and put the car into 1st gear.

3. Slightly press the accelerator and use the clutch to find the biting point. The car will become louder and try to move forwards when the bite has been found.

4. Complete your 360 observations.

5.Release the handbrake.

6.The car will then start to move, so practice dipping the clutch up and down to control the speed of the car (All of the time, keeping the gas steady). Try dipping the clutch up and down in very small movements to keep the cars speed as slow as possible. If the car slows down too much, raise the pedal slightly to increase the speed.

Remember, practice makes perfect!

The disadvantages of poor clutch control is that could end up burning your clutch out quicker, resulting in you having to  purchase a clutch replacement in a Bedford garage. Also, clutches are not cheap and usually cost over £500 for parts and fitting!

If you are taking driving lessons in Bedford and still have questions on clutch control, please feel free to call us on 0800 4581 226 and we will answer any questions.

Driving with Dyspraxia

Posted on by

Learning to drive can bring some difficulties for everyone, but a syndrome called Dyspraxia can intensify these problems for some pupils without them even knowing it…

Dyspraxia affects hand-eye co-ordination, spatial awareness and short-term memory sequences. It is a hidden disability present from birth and affects between 6 and 10 per cent of the population.

Due to the areas that Dyspraxia affects, your ability to handle and maneuver a car could be at jeopardy as well. Your ability to judge speed, distance and sense of direction can also be affected. I’ve been a driving instructor for the last 6 years, so I am aware that the majority of my pupils have faced some of these problems whilst learning to drive but Dyspraxia works quite differently.

If you was to type “Dyspraxia” into a search engine, you would be flooded with information connected with schooling related problems and little recognition of the affects that it can have on adults. Learning to drive is a key area of difficulty for adults with Dyspraxia making it very common for people to receive a diagnosis through a difficulty in learning to drive. So I thought it would be a helpful idea to increase its awareness and shed some light on what it is all about.

A previous driveJohnsons pupil who was taking driving lessons in Bedford, seemed to find processing directions rather hard. He would need instructions repeated a numerous amount of times and found it very difficult to remember sequences that had just been explained. There were also times when he would practice a manoeuvre and do it perfectly but would then struggle achieving the same result again for some time afterwards. This pupil was later diagnosed with Dyspraxia, but often thought that the problems that he was encountering was down to nerves. With patience, determination and hard work on both parts, driveJohnson’s helped him to pass his driving test. Unfortunately for others, this isn’t always the case. Internet forums show cases where people have had to use various different driving instructors due to lack of patience. One driving blog actually stated that her  instructor asked her: “ Can you actually see?”

However, despite this, the DVLA or any leading insurers have included Dyspraxia as a medical condition that affects your fitness to drive. So, despite on any rumours or opinions, a Dyspraxic person are as fit as anyone else to drive.

There are various support sources available for learning to drive with Dyspraxia where you can visit websites such http://www.dyspraxiafoundation.org.uk/ where further information is available to you. For more information on driving lesson in Bedford, call 07880886119.
