At driveJonhson’s we always want you to be able to pursue your driving instructor training with ease. However, the DSA have placed some conditions on who can apply to become an ADI. If any of the below doesn’t concern you, please let us know and we will assess your situation further. You are legally entitled to become an ADI if the following applies to you:
You must be over 21 years of age and held your licence for 3 years.
You hold a full UK, European Union or European Economic Area unrestricted car driving licence.
You have held the car driving licence for at least 4 out of the past 6 years before you join the register when you qualify. Holding the following all count towards the four years : a foreign driving licence, an automatic car driving licence, a provisional licence held after passing the driving.
You have not been disqualified from driving in the last four years before you join the register.
You are a ‘fit and proper’ person to have your name entered on the register. Any previous motoring convictions/other criminal records will be taken into consideration.
Another minimum requirement for becoming a registered driving instructor when you first apply is a CRIMINAL RECORD CHECK. You will then be rechecked every four years after that if you choose to extend your ADI registration.
If you do currently hold a criminal record, you may still be able to train for a driving instructors licence depending on the offence and its circumstances. The DSA will need to assess whether or not you are a risk to your pupils and will consider the following factors :
How serious the offence is
When the offence occurred
If your conviction/offence is relevant
Assess if there is a pattern of offending behaviour
Your personal circumstances involved with the offence, also if there are any other explanations or defence on your behalf.
Although your personal circumstances will be considered, your application is unlikely to be successful if you have been convicted of offences involving drugs, violence, drugs, sexual or financial situations. If you name is/has been on the ‘Sex offenders’ register or you have been prohibited from working with children your application will also be unlikely.
Having Disabilities and Becoming a Driving Instructor.
Having a disability doesn’t prevent you in becoming an ADI. If you possess and unrestricted driving licence you can apply through the normal process. However. if your licence is restricted to driving an automatic vehicle, you will not be permitted to teach in a manual car.
You will have to carry out an ‘emergency control assessment’ before DSA considers your application. This is done to assess our ability of how you would take control of a vehicle in case of an emergency from the passengers seat.

If you are studying for your theory driving test after the 23rd January test 2012, you should know that the DSA have altered the way that the test is now passed. The test now also consists of new case study scenarios in which the DSA will not publish any of the questions or material in order to push your knowledge to the limit.
You will be given a scenario or short story where you will then be asked 5 case study based questions that are aimed to test your knowledge on various subjects. The DSA believe that the former theory test doesn’t allow you to assess your driving theory knowledge but to simply memorise what may occur during the test.
The theory test will still consist of 50 multiple choice questions with the 14 Hazard perception clips still being included. Although the theory test has now changed, it is still essential to revise as much as possible to ensure that you are completely ready.
Here are are a few tips as to how you can revise for the new theory test to guarantee a 1st time pass.
Study the Highway code : The Highway code will teach you how roads operate and the rules in which to follow. If you are ever unsure of any information, The Highway code will be sure to provide you with accurate and precise answers.
Practice with as many of the Hazard Perception test videos as possible : Interactive videos can be found online or on the Driving Test Success DVD’s and allows you to see how the section would operate in the actual theory test.
Use up to date and relevant DVD material : Th Driving Test Success DVD covers all areas of the test making it easy for you recap any subjects that you want to revise again.
New changes to the test may seem scary but if you revise properly, there is nothing to worry about. For more information on new changes to the theory driving test, please call 0800 458 1226 today!

If you are taking taking lessons with our driving instuctors in Luton, you will know that there is a 1 in 4 chance of receiving an Emergency Stop during your driving test. An Emergency Stop will test your competence in stopping the car as quickly and as safely as possible. It’s important to know how to carry it out efficiently as it could result in you failing your test.
Why is an Emergency Stop important?
You may have to carry out an Emergency Stop for various reasons when you drive. A small child may run into the road, someone in front may suddenly brake or there could be problems with your own car in which the safest thing to do is stop the vehicle. Hopefully you won’t need to but whatever the reason may be, you need to know how to stop the car in the quickest way possible to prevent a car accident.
If you drive with our driving instructors in Luton, your driving instructor will thoroughly cover the Emergency Stop before your driving test. However, here are some of the reasons you may fail on performing an Emergency Stop :
Not reacting quickly enough. A delay in reaching the brake pedal quickly enough will cause the car to travel further than it should.
Not stopping quickly enough. The brake pedal should be pressed very firmly. By not doing so, the car will take longer to stop.
Vehicle skids out of control. Stamping on the pedal resulting in a skid, although a small skid if bought under control quickly might not fail you.
Taking your hand off of the steering wheel before the vehicle stops. You try to apply the parking brake or touch the gear stick before the vehicle has actually stopped.
Applying the parking brake before the vehicle has stopped. This could result in the vehicle going out of control.
Not checking your mirrors once you have stopped. You will not be aware of what is going on behind you. Not completing an all round observation once you are asked to drive on. A 360 observations must be done as usual before you drive on to ensure it is safe to move off.
Not signaling if there were someone to benefit while stationary or before moving off after the Controlled Stop. It could be a car in front or behind you, let them know you are stationary or let them know you are about to move off, if it is safe to do so.

If you are taking driving lessons with our driving instructors in Aylesbury, you will know that your speed should always be considered whilst driving. It keeps everyone safe and prevents road accidents which is what we should all aim to be – safe drivers!
You will receive a major fault on your driving test for driving too fast or slow on various roads, so here are some speed limit rules to ensure that you Pass with Class! It is important that you drive with the flow of the traffic which means that everyone should be travelling at similar speeds (within the speed limit) For example, if you are travelling on a dual carriageway which has the limit of 70mph, you should try travelling at around 65-70mph where possible. This is because driving too slowly can also cause road accidents. Travelling 35 mph on a 70mph road can cause tailgating or dangerous overtaking which are also safety issues.
There other factors that you should also consider when contemplating your speed. Road conditions are a very good example of this. Although you may be able to travel 70mph on a dual carriageway doesn’t mean that is appropriate if there is thick snow or ice on the road. Always remember to adapt to your driving conditions! Below, are the national speed limits for the UK for cars and motorbikes:
Built up areas : 30MPH
Single Carriageway : 60MPH
Dual Carriageway :70MPH
Motorway : 70MPH
These speed limits apply at all times. The only exception is if road signs indicates a different speed limit. For example, a very built up area may only have the limit of 20mph. If you are unsure of any speed limits then please speak to your driving instructors in Aylesbury about it which you can then record in your driveJohnson’s lesson planner. This is for the benefit of your driving test and your safety on the road!
If you would like more information on speed limits or our driving instructors in Aylesbury, feel free to call 0800 458 1226 today!

Driving Instructors in Aylesbury are here to teach you to drive safely and effectively. This shouldn’t stop once you have passed your test so here are some quick and easy tips to help you cut costs on petrol, helping you to save some money and the environment.
Avoid Excessive accelerating and braking
Smooth driving will always reduce fuel consumption as acceleration and deceleration use the most fuel. Keep appropriate distances between cars to prevent tailgating and slow down gradually when approaching junctions, red lights etc. Don’t over accelerate when pulling away as this increases your revs which also uses more petrol.
Avoid Under Inflated Tyres
Check your tyres regularly to ensure they are not under inflated. Flat tyres increase resistance on the car which increases fuel consumption. In 2010, a study was carried out by Michelin which showed that over 370 million litres of petrol is bring wasted every year due to under inflated tyres. Not only does under inflated tyres increase the amount of fuel you use, but also shortens the life of the tyre as well! If you are insure of how to check your tyres, always ask your driving instructors in Aylesbury to show you how!
Avoid Air – Conditioning
Blazing hot summers can be a nightmare when you are travelling, but air – conditioning can increase the use of your fuel by up to 10%! Try and use your fans on a cool setting or use the air con sparingly in short sessions.
Avoid Cold Engines
Cold engines you more fuel than warm ones so try and gently drive your car when you first start driving. All engines have an optimum performance temperature which will help the car save petrol. Until this temperature is reached do not heavily accelerate or or brake.
Lose Excess Weight off your car
Try and travel as lightly as possible. At some point you may need to load 5 suitcases into the car or move a table into your new house, but do not keep large amounts of storage in the car for unnecessary lengths of time. This is because on average approximately every 50kg extra weight will increase your fuel consumption by about 2%.
Use the right gear at the right time
Whilst you was learning to drive, your driving instructor in Aylesbury should of shown you how to change gears properly. High engine revs use more fuel so it is always important to change gear when it is needed. An engine runs most economically between 1.500 – 2,500. Try and stay within this limit unless a lot more power is required. It is also important to not coast in neutral. Modern cars shut off fuel to the engine automatically if you are to accelerating but leaving the car in neutral will still use some petrol to stop it from stalling.
