toy car and coins on insurance papers

The thought of finally having the chance to purchase your first car is exciting, and there is likely to be a whole host of model options in mind you’d love to get on the roads with. However, the biggest drawback you’ll experience as a first-time driver is insurance costs, you may well find your dream car at a low price, but are you prepared to pay out the high costs for a policy?

It is a little unfair that car insurance companies skyrocket the price of policies when you pass your test, it can be very disheartening when you are hit with having to pay over £100 a month to remain insured, even with a black box.

When searching for your first car, always opt for one in the group 1 insurance band, these are the cheapest cars to insure and will save you a considerable chunk of cash.

Group 1 Insurance Car List

Each car model falls into a different insurance category depending on a list of factors including their original value, performance and the price of parts. Categories range from 1 to 50 with group one cars being the cheapest to insure annually, including your first year.

Most cars in the group one category are simple models including fewer components likely to go wrong with a smaller engine and are cheap to run, making them the perfect first cars. Although many drivers presume first cars will lack the visually appealing factor, nowadays, this isn’t the case; you can purchase a modern looking vehicle but without the high cost.

If high insurance quotes are worrying you and you’re struggling to find one within your budget, or you want to get a rough idea of potential car options for the future, here are some of the cheapest group one cars!

Nissan Micra

Nissan has most definitely upped their game over the last few years, producing new models in a range of different vibrant shades, ranging from orange to blue to green, unlike their older models who were known for being relatively dull in colour. The Nissan Micra is considerably bigger than most other vehicles in the group one category with a lot more legroom and holds more of a sporty appearance, perfect for those who want a ‘grown-up’ looking car but without paying thousands. Inside is a range of modern technology from Bluetooth to USB input.

Vauxhall Corsa

The Vauxhall Corsa is a long-running popular first car; young drivers have been opting for the option of a Corsa for over ten years. It’s one of the most common cars for instructors to teach in, so many drivers stick to what they know for their first few years while they get used to taking on the roads independantly. Similarly to the Nissan Micra, the Vauxhall Corsa has evolved dramatically through recent years without compromising on the reliability its known for. The 1.4-litre Corsa is the cheapest to insure, which is a bigger engine size than most other group-one cars.

The Vauxhall Corsa is known as one of the easiest cars to learn in. If you’re interested in learning in a Corsa, we have many instructors in our driving school franchise who teach in both new and older models including Amaar Mohammed who teaches driving lessons in Northampton, Jaspal Nottey who is a driving instructor in Leeds and many more.

What Will Be Your First Car?

Although the thought of paying your insurance at first seems like a massive downside to purchasing your first car, there are many ways to lower the price. Many drivers opt for a lower spec car with a smaller engine for their first car to get used to being on the roads alone, then spend the meantime saving up for a more expensive, luxury car later on down the line when insurance premiums will be lower.
