In the event you're about to touch the kerb, just stop the car and take a shunt forwards again by at around 1-2 feet, so when you go back into reverse, you can turn away from the kerb more. If you have made a real meal of the manoeuvre, then you can go forwards even more towards your starting position. As long as you keep your observations up you can take up to 2-3 shunts.
