Sometimes you may need help hearing or understanding the examiner's directions. Ask politely and immediately for them to repeat the instruction. Don't guess or ask when you are too close to the junction. You can re-enforce the direction by asking. The examiner will happily confirm this for you.

Did you know you can touch the gear lever if you are unsure of what gear you are in? Some cars will tell you what gear you are in, and others don't. If in doubt, briefly touch the gear lever and based on its position, you should be able to identify what gear you are in without looking down.
