If in doubt, briefly touch the gear lever and based on its position, you should be able to identify what gear you are in without looking down.

Moving off is in the top 10 reasons for failing a driving test. A couple of classic reasons are: being in the wrong gear when stationary at lights or a junction and then stalling; and another is moving off with the handbrake still on or slightly on, especially on hills.
