Frequently asked questions...
We help thousands of people to pass their test every year and can assure you that driving test nerves are very common. Everyone feels at least a little apprehensive before their driving test but, for some people, the nerves before a driving test can be utterly crippling. People have different ways of dealing with this, from breathing exercises to taking Rescue Remedy. At driveJohnson's, we have put together a helpful guide to all the effective ways we know to deal with driving test nerves here.
If you are beginner, don’t worry - our driving school in Peterborough has some great areas for you to learn the basics in. These include Stanground, Dogsthorpe, Netherton and Paston/Gunthorpe. These areas are quiet with long, straight roads, with a few left and right turns and parked cars.
Mastered that already? We then typically move towards North/South Bretton to teach, practice and master roundabouts.
Grasped that already too? Okay, then finally we move on to test routes in more detail, covering some of the popular fail areas (not for our pupils of course). Some of the classic failure areas include the eye roundabout and the A47 towards Northborough (naughty blind corner across a narrow bridge). Stanground to Yaxley via Farcet areas also cause many learners issues, with the speed changes and the not-so-obvious mini roundabouts.
Wherever you live, one of our quality approved instructors will tailor your driving lessons in Peterborough to your current ability and choose suitable areas to teach you well and build up your confidence.
Yes, we have automatic driving instructors in Peterborough that can provide you with quality driving lessons at an affordable price. All of our automatic driving lessons are carried out by Grade-A driving instructors in Peterborough who will create custom lesson plans to help you learn at the perfect pace for you.
Yes, we have highly experienced, fully qualified, Grade A female driving instructors in Peterborough ready to teach you. All of our female driving instructors in the area are in demand and tend to get booked up very quickly, so if you would prefer to learn with a woman driving instructor do contact us as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
There is only one driving test centre in the city which is located on Second Drove in Fengate. If the waiting time for a driving test is long, some pupils living in towns north of Peterborough, e.g. Market Deeping or Bourne, may opt for a Grantham test.
As the driving test centre is located in Fengate, candidates often make the mistake of not checking both directions before turning right out of the test centre onto Second Drove. This road can get busy with lorries, visitors to the rugby club, and traffic using the industrial area opposite the test centre.
As you leave Second Drove, you will turn left or right onto Fengate. This can be tricky at certain times of day if HGV lorries in Fengate are waiting to unload. Turning left will take you towards the city centre, so make sure you have practised the mini-roundabouts into the city, going past the University towards the Cathedral. If you turn right, you will either head towards Boongate or Oxney Road.
During busy times, tests are often directed away from the city centre into more rural roads and villages, namely Eye, Eye Green, Newborough, Farcet or Yaxley. Some of the rural roads are single-lane roads with numerous passing places, Eyebury Road being an especially tricky location.
With dual carriageways on your doorstep, it is likely these will be included in your driving test. Some routes will take you on the Frank Perkins Parkway, which leads to some tricky spiral roundabouts: Boongate, Eye, Brotherhood, Hampton, Cardea and Queensgate.
Some roads need extra vigilance for speed limit signs, eg. Bourges Boulevard between Maskew Avenue and Brotherhood used to be a 40mph limit, but it is now a 30mph limit. Examiners' sat-navs still identify it as 40mph and not many people observe the speed limit, so make sure to follow road signs at all times.
Also, watch out for the speed limits on the A605 between Stanground and the Amazon distribution centre past Cardea. This is a national speed limit road. The signs aren’t obvious and candidates often mistake the limit on this road to be 40mph.
There are a couple of one-way streets to be careful of in Hempsted and West Town off Mayors Walk. Older parts of the city are generally very busy with parked cars, delivery vehicles and buses, so be alert and plan well in these locations, including Fletton, Woodston, West Town, Millfield and Dogsthorpe.
