Frequently Asked Questions
Yes they do. In fact that’s one of our first questions we ask any prospective instructor wanting to join driveJohnson's.
As you approach your driving test your local driving instructor in Plymouth will cover as many test routes as they can with you, often doing a few mock test with you along the way.
Everyone's preferences/requirements are different. However, if you haven’t tried learning to drive in a manual car first, we would always recommend trying it and only if you really struggle consider going over to automatic.
40,000 of the 720,000 driving tests taken each year are in automatic cars. That means only 1 in every 18 driving tests are for automatic transmission. For many reasons, the UK hasn’t moved onto predominently automatic cars yet like the USA.
The average waiting time for a driving test in Plymouth is 4-6 weeks. Busier times of the year are July, August and September. During these times the waiting time can often go up to approximately 8 weeks.
Sometimes during December and January the waiting time can increase because of bad weather. Each time a test is cancelled because of bad weather, the candidate has to be rebooked, therefore increasing the overall waiting time.
At driveJohnson’s, our office team can often assist and help you find an earlier test, when you call up - ask for more information on finding an earlier test. This service is only available to existing driveJohnson’s pupils.
Yes, we have driving instructors in Plymouth and many of the surrounding areas. Just some of the areas we cover in Plymouth are Milehouse, Efford and Mount Batten.
Plymouth is commonly known to be one of the most difficult areas to pass your driving test in, which is why we hand-pick our driving instructors, ensuring they have a fantastic knowledge of the areas and know all of the test routes inside and out - giving you the best possible chance of passing your test with us. Most people failed due to poor observations and not enough use of their mirrors - but don't worry, our driving school in Plymouth will encourage this from your very first lesson, meaning you will put this to practice when driving without even thinking about it!
When you learn to drive in the city with driveJohnson's, you'll begin your lessons in the inland residential areas like Perverall, Hartley and Efford. This is because the more complex and difficult roads in this port city are along the seafront, where the tourism and main porting industry is situated. Being on the coast, the landscape of the roads can prove to be quite tricky - there are quite a few steep hills, slanting and narrow streets which means you'll have to learn good clutch control and hill starts pretty quickly.
Once you're comfortable driving in these quieter areas, your instructor will take you into the busier areas closer to the seafront, particularly those areas that will be included in the driving test. You'll cover the A38 Devon Expressway to gain some invaluable dual-carriageway experience, as well as the A386. When you get into the city, you'll learn how to deal with large, multi-lane roundabouts, like the one linking Saltash Road to Cobourg Street and the Charles Cross Roundabout. These roundabouts require you to be alert and be in the correct lane in order to go off at the appropriate exit. The narrow roads around the city will often require you to use some tricky one-way streets and emerge at some junctions where visibility is low.
Our driving instructors have been teaching people to use these junctions and roads for more than a decade, and will share with you all the tips and tricks to help you prepare you for everything Plymouth will throw at you. They'll get you up to scratch and, in no time at all, you'll be booking your driving test in this beautiful city!
