If you have had no prior driving experience, your driving instructor will take you to a quiet residential road, somewhere like Whitehouse Gardens, so that you can go over the basic car controls and practice moving off and stopping the car. Once you have mastered this, you start driving around the quieter estates in Southampton, such as Harefield, to tackle turning left and right from a major to minor roads, manoeuvres and emerging from T Junctions.
As you grow in confidence, you will find yourself driving on busier roads around Southampton and the surrounding areas, including Hedge End, Maybush, Rownhams and Totton. You'll practice roundabouts on the A3057 as well as dual carriageways on the A3024. Your driving instructor will teach you how to handle all the tricky areas you might face on your test, including the complicated junction where the A33 meets Mountbatten Way, the Western Esplanade and Central Station Bridge.
As you approach your driving test, which you will likely have booked at Southampton driving test centre, your driving instructor will teach you the popular test routes. They will also teach you motorway driving on the M27 and M271. Rest assured that you will progress at a speed you feel comfortable with and that is tailored to you.
