There have been many success stories recently about instructors who were unfortunate and weren’t granted a SEISS grant from the government.
Anyone who has significantly lost out financially can apply but those instructors who haven’t received any financial support whatsoever would have a particular advantage based on what I’ve been told.
If you are a trainee instructor or you haven’t completed a full year self assessment but can prove your business overheads, expenses and show both profit before the virus then lack of income during the pandemic, you should apply.
If you can prove significant earnings before the virus but your self assessment doesn’t reflect this, then it’s still worth applying for but bear in mind you will need a reasonable explanation why your self assessment differs from recent income before the virus.
For many instructors new to the industry, often the first year of earnings are not great, especially if you have come from a franchise charging £800-£1000 a month and not received the pupils you needed for example. This could be a reasonable explanation for a low net profit.

What will they ask for?
They will ask for information such as bank statements before and during the virus to show the difference in your income. They will also ask for examples of overheads. Some councils ask for minimum overheads of £250 a month. If you don’t have this in one statement, don’t give up, show them what you have and I believe you may still have some joy.
When does this grant end?
The grant ends 31st March 2021. I know it’s short notice, but it worth 1-2 hours of time submitting all of the information.
