Test tip of the month for Wigan

Moving off is in the top 10 reasons for failing a driving test. A couple of classic reasons are: being in the wrong gear when stationary at lights or a junction then stalling; and another is moving off with the handbrake still on or slightly on, especially on hills.

Useful driving test tip for Wigan

Many learners fail their manoeuvre because they rush it. They get concerned about keeping other road users waiting. It's good to be considerate of other road users, but on your test you have got to go nice and slow so you have time to do all the observations needed. The faster you do the manoeuvre, the faster your observations should be. You know what to do - keep your speed slow so you have time to observe!

Frequently asked questions...

I've just booked! What will happen on my first driving lesson in Wigan?

Firstly, welcome to driveJohnson's learners club! We are really pleased you decided to book with us and look forward to helping pass your test.

In terms of your first driving lesson, your driving instructor in Wigan will start off by asking you about your previous driving experience. If you haven't had any previous driving lessons, don't worry. Many people come to us without any prior experience. Your driving instructor will also go over the basics of the car, plus they will do an eyesight check and check your provisional licence - please bring this with you to your first driving lesson.

After this, your driving instructor will take you to a quiet area to begin practising your driving skills. This will likely cover moving off and stopping, clutch control, the different pedals and how to steer.

Which areas of Wigan will I be driving in during my lessons?

Your driving lessons in Wigan will take you all over Wigan. Your driving instructor will start you on quiet residential streets in the suburbs to learn the basics and gradually progress to more challenging roads, such as Saddle Junction. You will then tackle dual carriageways (such as the A49), mini roundabouts and large roundabouts, as well as trickier urban areas, including Wigan town centre. Once you are fully confident and skilled with these, then your driving instructor may teach you motorway driving, including the difficult M58/M6 junction. This will all be done at a pace that you feel happy with, under the expert guidance of your driving instructor.

I had driving lessons before in Wigan with a different driving school and hated it. What's different about your driving school?

We are sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with another driving school. Sadly, it is a story we often hear from learners that come to us from other driving schools. Having a bad experience can make you wonder if you hate driving lessons but this doesn't mean that you will hate all driving lessons going forward.

There can be many reasons why people have had a bad experience: the most common we hear about is feeling anxious, that it's boring or that they didn't like their driving instructor. Feeling anxious is normal. At driveJohnson's our driving instructors are all highly trained and experienced to put you at your ease. They will go at your pace and build up your confidence gradually so that your nerves fade away. We also have well-structured driving lessons which are planned to help you have fun whilst you are learning. Our driving lessons are always interesting and designed to be enjoyable so that you want to stay with us. And we find that this is very effective - our overall rating from our learners is 9 out of 10! 88% of our business comes from people referring others to us so we know we are doing a good job.

If you have any concerns at all, please do not hesitate to call us on 0203 9705101. Our team would be very happy to help.
