Intensive driving courses

If you are looking to pass your driving test fast through an intensive driving course, then we can help you.

Our speciality is NOT taking your money, throwing some lessons at you and hoping for the best, like many companies that boast an intensive driving course in 5 days. Our process is instead built around you and what you need.

For all of your questions answered about our intensive driving courses, read on.

What is an intensive driving course?

An intensive driving course is a style of driving tuition taught over a shorter period to help a learner get to test standard far quicker.

Traditionally, a new driver will need to have at least 40 hours of driving lessons as well as 20 additional private driving lessons. Of course, different people learn at different rates so that figure will be higher for some and lower for others.

Are intensive driving courses good for beginners?

Unfortunately, intensive driving courses aren’t suited to every beginner. However, if you’re able to pick things up quickly then it may be worth considering.

Unlike many driving schools, we ask that you complete an assessment lesson first before starting an intensive course. This way, your driving instructor can assess your ability and create a plan of action as a result.

If your instructor feels you have been able to quickly adapt to a driving environment, they might suggest you enrol on an intensive driving course.

How long is an intensive driving course?

Everyone is different and we will build your intensive driving course around your specific requirements. That is why we begin with a 2-hour assessment lesson so that your driving instructor can see your individual test-readiness and adjust your course to your needs. In some cases, past students who have taken an intensive course have found themselves test-ready in as little as 2 weeks!

Can I still do an intensive driving course if I haven’t passed the theory test?

We don’t usually recommend doing this, as you can’t take the practical driving test without passing the theory test.

Let’s say you have 40 hours of lessons in 1-2 weeks but you haven’t passed your theory test. You could be waiting 2-4 weeks for a theory test and then, once passed, you could be waiting another 2-3 months for a driving test. Without continuing the lessons during this waiting time, you will begin to lose some of the knowledge and road experience you had built up in the 40 hours. If you decide to continue with a driving lesson every week whilst you are waiting, then the skills and experience you initially learnt won’t be forgotten.

In summary, we recommend you pass the theory test first before doing any driving lessons intensively.

Please be careful signing up to intensive course companies who offer the theory test and practical test in a certain timeframe. Check their reviews and you will often see lots of disappointment where the company has mismanaged the customer’s expectations.

Do intensive driving courses work?

To keep it short and straight to the point, yes. However, some contributing factors come into play for it all to work smoothly.

For example, having a driving instructor that you don’t necessarily get along with could harm your chances of making progress during the course. That’s another reason why we suggest the assessment lesson – to get to know your driving instructor before committing your time to them.

Why are driveJohnson’s intensive driving courses better than others?

The thing that sets driveJohnson’s apart from other driving schools is that we tailor a course suited to YOUR needs and not our company’s.

This means that if you would like to spread the hours of your intensive driving course over a longer period, we will accommodate that. If you need a few extra hours because of nerves, we will do our utmost to get those hours in for you. You won’t have to worry about overspending with us because we will have assessed you at the beginning.

Our intensive courses really are tailored to your needs, giving you the best possible chance of passing first time and joining our first-time pass club.
At driveJohnson’s, we recommend that all pupils who want to pass fast take our 2-hour assessment lesson. All of our assessment lessons are available throughout the UK, including those taking intensive driving lessons in London. Once you have done the assessment lesson, we can then get the ball rolling, advising how many hours you will likely need and the cost involved.

It’s a much more calculated way of doing an intensive driving course and it gives you, the pupil, the best possible chance of passing first time. This is one of the main reasons why our first-time pass rate has always been above 90%.

Driving instructor teaching pupil

What will I learn on a typical intensive driving course with driveJohnson’s?

When you’re learning to drive, the most important thing to remember is to have fun when you’re doing it. And that is exactly why every single instructor at driveJohnson’s ensures their intensive driving courses are fun.

We may be strict at times, but that’s only because we want the very best for our students and upcoming drivers. What kind of driving school would we be if we simply kept rolling through pupils and didn’t care about the quality of teaching that was behind each lesson? So, with that said, you should expect your intensive driving lessons to be fun, engaging and, most importantly of all, safe.

If you are a beginner, then your instructor will start with the controls of the car, moving off and stopping, and turning left and right. When your driving instructor is happy that you have picked up the basics, you will progress to more complicated exercises and driving on the open road. When your ability has improved, you will then progress onto subjects such as roundabouts, town driving and manoeuvres. Once you are competent in the above-mentioned, your instructor will start to prepare you for the driving test by going over the test routes and doing mock driving tests with you. You can be assured your instructor will leave no stone unturned when it comes to getting you test-ready!

Is there anything I should do before I start an intensive driving course?

If you want to pass your driving test quickly, there are a few more things you can do before you start learning to drive with an instructor.

You will need to have your provisional driving licence. If you intend to practise in your own time in a friend’s, family member’s or your own car, you’ll also need to be insured as a learner on that car and have a supervisor with the correct driving experience. We do suggest that you have a couple of driving lessons with a fully qualified driving instructor first though.

Before starting an intensive driving course, we would suggest passing your theory test. The theory training will significantly help you have a better understanding of the road and Highway Code, and you won’t have to wait weeks or months for a spot once you are ready to take your practical test. Without passing your theory test, you can’t take your practical test.

What if I find a cheaper intensive driving course elsewhere?

If you can find a company that is cheaper than us and provides the following, then please get in touch so we can at least price-match it:

  • We only use fully qualified driving instructors for our intensive courses, not trainees.
  • All of our instructors are local to the area where you will be taking your driving lessons and driving test. This is important when it comes to knowing the test routes and the overall quality of the lesson.
  • We have a consistently high online review score of 4.9 out of 5 on all the major reputable review platforms.
