“What’s the difference between an introduction and assessment lesson?” is a common question that many new pupils ask us. Here, we will explain the difference between the two options and the pros/cons of each.
One-Hour Introduction vs Two-Hour Assessment
You may be checking out our vast array of driving lesson options and find yourself spoilt for choice. Two of our lesson options that can be hard to choose between are the 1-hour introduction lesson and the 2-hour assessment lesson. Below, we will explain the differences between the two and the pros and cons of each to make it easier for you to decide which one to go for.
One-Hour Introduction Lesson
Our 1-hour introduction lesson allows you to meet your instructor and get a feel for the training vehicle. It is essential that you get on with your instructor (you will be spending a lot of time with them) and that you like their vehicle because if you don’t, it’ll hinder your learning and significantly slow things down.
The introduction lesson is perfect for those who are feeling apprehensive or nervous about starting driving lessons, or for anyone who has previously had a bad experience with another company and wants to try us out before committing.
The one-hour introduction lesson is suitable for people of all abilities; however, it may be less useful for complete beginners. This is because the instructor will have to first drive to a suitable place which could take up 20 minutes of your lesson. They will then show you the basic controls of the car and how to move and stop the vehicle. Just as you’re getting started and getting into the swing of things, the lesson will be over and you’ll be left wanting more. In this case, our 2-hour assessment would be more suitable as you will be able to cover more ground.
Pros of a 1-hour introduction lesson:
- Opportunity to see if you get on with your instructor (we’re confident you will).
- See if you like your instructor’s vehicle.
- Settle any nerves and put to rest any uncertainties.
Cons of a 1-hour introduction lesson:
- May not be as beneficial for a complete beginner as it would be for someone that’s driven before.
- You won’t cover as much in a 1-hour lesson as you would in a 2-hour one.
- Your instructor would not have seen you drive for long enough to judge how many lessons you need or when you should book your test.
2-hour assessment lesson
Our famous 2-hour assessment lesson is a chance for your instructor to judge what level your driving is at and give you an estimation of how many hours you might need.
Throughout the lesson, your instructor will make notes and provide instruction and feedback throughout. At the end of the lesson, the instructor will provide more feedback and an overall view of how they felt the lesson went. They will also give you an estimation of how many hours you’re likely to require; our instructors are usually correct within 5 hours of their estimate!
The assessment lesson is suitable no matter what level you’re at. Whether you’re a complete beginner or have driven before, our 2-hour assessment lesson will help you pass faster.
Many learners find our assessment lesson to be useful halfway through their learning. This allows them to see the areas where they need to improve and the instructor can put together some targets to help them get test-ready faster. The assessment lesson is also great if you have failed a test and want to see what areas of your driving need the most improvement before booking another test.
Pros of a 2-hour assessment lesson:
- Will help you pass your driving test faster.
- You will find out how many hours you need.
- Allows your instructor to put together a lesson plan for you and help you get the most out of your lessons.
- An opportunity to cover a broad range of areas in one lesson.
Cons of a 2-hour assessment lesson:
- If you are extremely nervous or apprehensive, it may be too long a lesson to start with.
- If you have a low attention span, you may find it hard to focus during the last half of this lesson. Don’t worry, our award-winning driving instructors will be used to this and will know how to get you back on focus.
