Welcome to driveJohnson’s

Thank you for choosing driveJohnson’s Driving School.

We have sent your booking to your dedicated driving instructor to confirm your driving lesson date and time. If you don’t hear from your driving instructor, please assume the lesson is going ahead.

Occasionally, your instructor might contact you directly (with notice) to adjust the date or time of your lesson or to introduce themselves to you before the first lesson.

What to bring to your first driving lesson

Provisional driving licence

If you don’t have a provisional driving licence, you cannot start learning to drive. If you have lost or can’t find it, please let your instructor or our office know at least 24 hours before your lesson starts to avoid being charged.

Correct footwear

Flip flops, high heels and boots with thick soles are not ideal for driving and can make your learning experience more difficult. Try to wear comfortable shoes or trainers with a thin, flat sole if possible.

Check your eyesight

Check your eyesight before your first lesson. You should be able to read a UK vehicle number plate from a distance of at least 20.5 metres. If you wear glasses, please bring them with you on your driving lessons.

Cancelling or changing your lesson date or time

If your driving instructor has already contacted you, please contact them first if you need to cancel or change your lesson date or time. Our cancellation policy is 24 hours’ notice if you would like to avoid being charged. Many driving schools ask for 48 hours’ notice, so we are trying to be reasonable and fair to you.

Booking a driving test

You should only book a driving test under your instructor’s guidance. If you book a driving test without consulting your instructor first, you may be disappointed if they cannot accommodate your driving test. To avoid disappointment, always consult your instructor to make sure they are available and check they think you will be ready in time to take the test.

Your instructor’s commitment to you and your driving test

Your instructor has a duty of care to you and the DVSA to only bring you to a driving test in their car when they believe you are ready to drive safely on your own.

In the event your instructor doesn’t think you are ready for the driving test, they should give you at least 5 days’ notice so you have the opportunity to change your test or find an alternative instructor.

If you have been training with your instructor from the very beginning and you have come through driveJohnson’s, then your instructor should warn you in advance that you may not be ready for your driving test, giving you the opportunity to take their advice and reschedule your test accordingly.

If you have not come through driveJohnson’s, then your instructor may have differing terms to the above.

How the DVSA Trigger Point System may affect you and your instructor

On 20th August 2021, the DVSA announced that all driving instructor test results would be digitally recorded and the data would be monitored for quality control purposes.

Instructors who take learners who are below the recommended DVSA standard for their driving test would activate the Trigger Point System on a yearly basis, meaning the instructor would need to be re-tested on their ability to teach.

Each year, the DVSA will review each instructor’s data and if their data falls below the recommended standards, the instructor will receive a standards check. If the instructor meets the minimum requirements, then they will only receive a standards check every 4 years.

You can find out more about the DVSA’s Trigger Point System and how they call the instructors in for a re-test by visiting the government website.

Established in 2005, driveJohnson’s prides itself on helping learner drivers pass as quickly and safely as possible. Our instructors are very busy and mostly work off personal recommendations, which is a good sign that they do a fantastic job.

Please trust your instructor’s professional advice and guidance.

Payment to your driving instructor

If you have pre-paid driveJohnson’s, we will transfer your money to the driving instructor after each lesson you receive. If you are paying cash on the day to your driving instructor, please have your money ready at the beginning of the lesson.

If you have paid driveJohnson’s directly, your money is protected. If you decide to pay your instructor directly by cash or bank transfer, then we cannot be held responsible for it. Any money paid to the instructor is an agreement between you and them. It is recommended that you keep a written or digital record of any cash payments made to your instructor.

Please see our full terms and conditions regarding payment to your instructor.
