11 Croydon roads could soon be banned to drivers

Residents in Croydon may soon be banned from driving on 11 streets due to safety concerns.

Croydon has already implemented 24 ‘school streets’ and wants to increase that to 35 when these 11 new roads are approved.

The aim of ‘school streets’ is to improve children’s safety and air quality whilst encouraging them to walk or cycle to school.

The scheme began in 2017 and would mean that drivers and people taking driving lessons in Croydon would face fines for entering the roads where the restrictions are in place.

The headteacher of Krishna Avanti Primary School, a local school in Croydon, said, “The roads here can become very busy with speeding vehicles, a lack of school signage and railings along the entry and exit points to the school.”

While the roads will cause drivers to receive a ban, residence and emergency vehicles will be given permits to allow them to travel down these roads.

Croydon Mayor, Jason Perry, said: “We know how important it is to make sure pupils can get to and from school safely, and School Street schemes can make a difference.

“It is important that we listen to local residents, schools, and the whole community before introducing these schemes, so I encourage as many people as possible to take part in our survey and share your views on the proposals.”

The schools that will be part of the scheme are:

  • Gonville Academy – Gonville Road
  • Good Shepherd Catholic Primary and Nursery School – Dunley Drive and Walker Close
  • Harris Academy South Norwood – Cumberlow Avenue
  • Howard Primary School – Dering Place CR0 1DT and Barnham Road
  • Kenley Primary School and Kindergarten – New Barn Lane and Mosslea Road
  • Krishna Avanti Primary School – Southbridge Place
  • Oasis Academy Shirley Park – Stroud Green Way and Swinburne Crescent
  • Park Hill Junior and Infants School – Stanhope Road
  • South Norwood Primary School – Crowther Road, Birchanger Road and Gresham Road
  • St Cyprian’s Greek Orthodox Primary Academy – Springfield Road and Ingram Road
