The hardest and easiest driving test centres in the world

9th August 2021 | 5 minute read

Driving tests are something that no matter how much you practice, you’ll always worry about the end result.

The truth is that it is perfectly natural to worry as not only does no one want to fail but you want to show off just how far you have come from that beginning lesson.

Whether it has taken you six hours on an intensive course or over 30 hours in the car everyone has to take the dreaded test.

Whilst in the UK we have to do a theory test before we take the practical test, our overall test is only ranked 16th hardest in the world.

With some countries asking drivers to do aptitude tests, first aid theory and even doing a reverse slalom, the UK is not as tough as some.

When it comes to the hardest place to pass a driving test it is a close call between Denmark, Finland and Japan.

Whilst in all three you still have to do the same set up in the UK, in order to pass you must complete more than what we put our students through.

When it comes to learning in Japan you would need to pass an aptitude test that makes sure you are not only physically fit enough to drive but also that your vision, and hearing is suitable for the roads.

In Denmark, instead of doing an aptitude test, the student will have to do seven hours of first aid theory and be asked to drive in a figure of eight.

Along with these, Denmark definitely goes above and beyond by making students drive on slippery tracks and even do both a forward and backwards slalom.

Finally, Finland makes the students complete 18 hours as a minimum before they attempt their test along with night driving and a skid pan session which helps them adjust to driving in the rain.

All three countries have a much tougher driving test than us in Great Britain but with the sheer amount of time, manoeuvres and dedication Denmark.

While countries like Japan require a 90% pass rate on the theory exam, Denmark will make sure that all of their new drivers are capable of doing anything and everything on and off the road.

Easiest driving test centre in the world

Whilst technically Mexico would be the easiest place to drive as they have no driving test, we will not be counting this on our list.

When it comes to some of the easier tests in the world, India takes the top spot as whilst they have no set theory and practical test, you do have to be able to show that you can do a couple of things.

To get a licence you will have to show that you can drive straight, turn left and stop.

All in all, it is pretty straight forward to pass in India but if you do not want to do this it can be even simpler by simply paying 500 – 1000 Rupees (£5-£10).

So, whether it is no test at all or a very straightforward test, some people get it much easier than we do.

Whilst some may say we are unlucky with how much we have to learn, the same cannot be said for Saudi Arabia who just make people drive forwards and reverse.

With these simplistic tests existing it really does show just how diverse peoples learning experiences can be.

How do areas in the UK compare?

If you are wishing that your test is as easy as that of India or Saudi Arabia or even as non-existent as it is in Mexico, the UK does have spots where the tests are easier.

With a pass rate of 84.9%, Inveraray in Scotland is by far the easiest place to pass.

In a close second and third is Mallaig and Gairloch in Scotland with a pass rate of 83.3% each.

Scotland in fact has the top five easiest driving spots with Pitlochry and Isle of Mull taking the fourth and fifth spot respectively.

The trend is that the more rural of an area you live in the more likely you are to pass due to a number of factors, including driver availability.

When compared to taking your driving lessons in Birmingham and ultimately the test, there are some driving test centres such as The Pavilion in Birmingham which has a pass rate of just 29.6%. It is clear that going local could actually benefit you massively. Another area in the UK with a notoriously low driving test pass rate is London.

Whilst you may live somewhere rural that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to get an instructor.

For instance, if you live in Pitlochry, you can get taught by a number of driveJohnson’s Instructors all of which can help you pass.
