How to prepare for your first driving lesson

1. Provisional driving licence

Before you can begin your driving lessons, you will need a valid provisional driving licence. You will need to bring both the card and paper part of your licence with you to your first driving lesson. Your provisional licence shows your instructor that you’re legally allowed on the road; without it, your instructor will not be able to commence your lessons.

2. Plan your finances

Before you start learning to drive, you should be aware of the cost of learning to drive. Once you have an idea of how much it’s going to cost you, you will need to plan how you’re going to pay for it, whether you’ve got savings or a family member is paying for your lessons. A great way to pay for your driving lessons is to ask friends and family for driveJohnson’s vouchers for birthday and Christmas presents.

3. Schedule in time

You will need to plan your time to fit your driving lessons around your other day-to-day activities. Whether you’re a student or working, you will need to factor in at least 1 or 2 hours a week for your driving lessons. We recommend you have a two-hour lesson once a week to get the most out of your lessons. Your driving instructor will be able to give you an idea of how many driving lessons you need after your first lesson.

4. Be confident

Try not to work yourself up too much before your first driving lesson. Be confident and believe that you can and will learn to drive. Getting an understanding of what happens in your first driving lesson may help you ease your mind.

5. What to wear

Believe it or not, what you wear to your first driving lesson is important. You will be sat in the car for at least an hour, so you need to be comfortable. One of our driving instructors in Bolton says: “You should wear non-restrictive clothing as you will want to be able to move around freely. You should also wear suitable footwear that allows you to control the pedals properly – this means no flip flops, heels or anything with a thick sole such as platform boots.”
