Nottingham Resident found driving without a licence for 72 years

Nottinghamshire Police stopped a man in his 80’s for driving whilst uninsured.

As police began speaking to the driver from Bulwell, it became clear that he had no insurance and never passed his driving test.

The driver, born in 1938, told police that he had been driving since 1950 when he was 12-years-old, and he has never taken a driving test or held insurance on his cars.

Not only had he never been stopped by the police, but he had also never had an accident, caused any injuries or caused someone to lose out financially due to having never hit anyone whilst being uninsured.

Police only pulled up the vehicle as it was flagged by an ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) camera as having no insurance.

Once the car was highlighted as being uninsured, the driver was stopped alongside the Tesco Extra down Jenninson Street.

If you are taking driving lessons in Nottingham or the surrounding area, you will likely be seen on an ANPR camera. Due to this, it is even more critical that you learn with a reputable driving school franchise and avoid illegal driving instructors.

Inspector Christine Busuttil, of the City North neighbourhood policing team, said: “Officers from the City North Operation Reacher team were out on proactive patrols in Bulwell, at around 4.05 pm on 26 January when they pulled over a man driving a Mini One near to the Tesco Extra store.”

“The driver was pulled over as a result of the vehicle being noted as having no insurance.”

“The man in his 80s was handed a traffic offence report and will be prosecuted for driving without a licence and driving with no insurance. The vehicle was immediately seized.”

“We would like to reassure the public we are regularly out on patrols, use camera vans and run operations to clamp down on motorists who commit offences on our roads and place other road users at risk.”
