How Should I Prepare For My Driving Theory Test?

How should I prepare for my driving theory test is something that many people ask our driving instructors and us. Theory tests take a lot of revision and practice if you wish to pass first time as the grade boundaries are so close to each other and every mark does count! Below are some quick tips on how to prepare for your theory test.

The Theory Test

The UK driving theory test consists of two parts:

  • 50 multiple-choice question section
  • Hazard perception test

The multiple-choice section of the test will question you on your knowledge of the highway code, while hazard perception part of the test looks at your ability to spot hazards in real-life scenarios. You will need to prepare for each section of the test separately.

The Importance of Preparing For Your Driving Theory Test

Some pupils overlook the importance of adequately preparing for your driving theory test. Not only can it get expensive at £23 each time if you fail multiple times, but it can also affect your performance during your driving lessons and set you back. The waiting time for a driving theory test can be up to four weeks in some towns and cities, so it’s best to do your preparation and pass first time round to avoid hefty waiting times.

The Highway Code

It’s important that you know the highway code before you take your driving theory test. Knowing the highway code will determine whether you pass or fail your theory test. The highway code is a set of rules set by the government to ensure pedestrians, animals, other drivers, motorcyclists and cyclists remain safe on the roads. Make sure you have memorised the Highway Code before you sit your theory!

Traffic Signs

A great way of practising and learning your road signs is by using our free theory test training (exclusive to driveJohnson’s pupils). Also, asking family/friends to question you on different road signs while you’re a passenger is another excellent way and also understand why they are there at the time.

Online Mock Theory Test

Before paying for your driving theory test, we recommend that you familiarise yourself with online mock theory tests so you can see what types of questions might come up during the real thing. If you’re consistently passing online mock theory tests, it’s a good sign that you’re ready for the real thing, and it will also boost your confidence. Much like taking a mock test when preparing for an exam at school, mock driving tests are an effective way to get yourself ready for the real thing.

Our Tips and Advice

  • Take your provisional licence with you

When going to sit your test, ensure you have your provisional licence with you. You no longer need the paper part, so don’t worry if you can’t find that. Unfortunately, if you don’t have your provisional licence with you – you will be unable to sit the test.

  • Practise reading out road signs

When driving as a passenger, get into the habit of practising reading out every possible road sign.

  • Take as many mock theory tests as possible and make sure you’re getting at least 43/50 every time.

One of our pupils who recently passed their theory ‘Louise Hutchinson’ said the following:

“I’m learning with Pete Thomas in Nottingham at the moment and has was spending at least 1 hour of my 2-hour lessons questioning me on every possible road sign we approached. I started practising this with my mum/dad, and it really helps.”
