5 test tips to help you pass your driving test in Newbury
We caught up with the mighty Karen Homick – driving instructor covering Newbury, and asked her for some top tips for taking your driving test at Newbury driving test centre.
When leaving the test centre at the end of Hambridge Road, you’ll come to a roundabout. The roundabout is on a slight incline. You’ll likely have to stop and wait for a safe gap. It’s a roundabout where many a nervous driver may stall. Be patient and wait for your opportunity to go. Use your handbrake, find your biting point and move on following the direction your examiner gives.
Love Lane is a popular road on test routes. Be aware of the speed limit changing from 20mph to 30mph and visa versa. Prepare for the length of the road, have priority to oncoming vehicle signs, scan ahead, spot the signs, look out for road markings, use good judgment and don’t drive on and be tempted to speed up or follow other cars through when there is an oncoming car that has priority.
The Robin Hood roundabout is a large multi-lane roundabout in the centre of Newbury. Be prepared if your examiner is taking you that way. You will be given ample time to know which direction you will be heading, so prepare on approach to get yourself in the correct lane. If you do find yourself in the incorrect lane, don’t panic or try and switch lanes whilst on the roundabout. Stay in the lane you’re in and go with it. Your examiner will take you on an alternative route.
It’s not uncommon for your driving examiner to ask you to pull up on the right side of the road with oncoming traffic coming towards you. The examiner isn’t trying to trick you, and they should also always say, “When it’s safe to do so, I would like you to pull up on the right side of the road” please don’t make a hasty decision. If you have cars coming towards you, check your mirror first, and if safe, come off the gas and then when it’s safe, do the manoeuvre.
When you start your driving test, look around you before setting off. You will be starting your driving test parked in a bay, and it’s common for two learners to move away at similar times. If you see another driver about to move away, pause and wait. If you move away simultaneously, you will likely fail your test. If you have waited for someone else to go – don’t forget to look around you again before setting off.
